Nursing Assistant Employment in the U.S

If you want to enter the healthcare profession as a certified nursing assistant you will need to know the particular certification requirements for the state you reside in. Most often students need to enroll in an approved school that prepares them for taking the CNA certification examinations. Usually the main requirements are that you attend classes on the basics of nursing care, receive hands-on practice and complete the license testing to become eligible to be employed.

Often a state has very particular requirements as to the amount of hourly instruction you receive, and the type of classroom curriculum. Before enrolling in a CNA school you will want to check with your state’s CNA registry to ensure the class you choose is accepted.  Training programs can be held in places like a nursing home, high school, college, or private schools. Many people choose nursing home instruction because they are often offered a job immediately after passing the requirements. (I found a good website that lists all of the nursing assistant certification requirements in the U.S states here)

The job itself will vary depending on whether you choose to work in a nursing home, hospital, or in a home health care environment. Generally nurse aides are tasked with doing basic tasks such as dressing, feeding and bathing patients as well as helping to administer medications in some cases. Employees will be required to know common health care terminology, disease control, and best practices of working in a health care setting.

Many nursing assistants believe there are some advantages of working as a home health care provider over one in a medical facility. Common reasons are that you can get to better know your patients in a home setting and the job often allows you to have a more flexible schedule. Many employees find that the ability to spend more one on one time and better get to know their patients is more enjoyable.

To be hired for the job of a nursing assistant you will need to show your certification credentials. When in the hiring process, employers are looking for upbeat people who have a good knowledge of nursing skills, are organized, well groomed, have excellent communicate, and pay attention to details. Often you will need references of past employers, and from people in your care. Many employers will ask about your skills level and previous length of employment. In addition they will often want to conduct an independent background check.

It is a smart idea to research any company you wish to work for to ensure they have a good reputation for treatment of their patients, and will treat you well. You can check patient, employee, and client feedback through the Better Business Bureau. In addition you may want to conduct a search or call the State Medical Board to see if theire are any outstanding issues on file. Overall, becoming a nursing assistant can be a very rewarding occupation and enable you to build valuable experience in the medical field you can use as you pursue additional degrees and advancement opportunities.

Healthcare Certifications

If one wants to get a better edge in terms of a higher salary as well as better job employment then he or she should be thinking about getting healthcare certifications.  Today, as the battle for job opportunities become more and more difficult, one should possess something that would give him an advantage in the field.  One of those advantages is getting a certification which would a testament to his capacity and his skills.  This will be his ticket to getting hired especially if he does not carry any recommendations with him from anyone whom his future employer knows.

Healthcare certifications are required in some medical careers and not in others.  Medical assistants for example, do not require any certification in order to get hired although there is an option to take one. But for those in which the state and the law strictly requires a certification, it would do you best to take and pass the certification process.  There are different requirements for different fields and what one may require may not be so in another. Hence, it is important to check with the licensing authority which handles the certification process in order to know what is required and what is not for a potential applicant.

Some of the purposes of providing for certification are the following: to provide a standard with which skills and competencies are measured and can be said to be within the required limits, to show proof of an applicant’s ability to perform a desired work, to provide safety to patients through the criminal background checks that are required for the certification, and to be able to able throughout the United States. Hence, the certification process is designed not only for the benefit of the applicant but also for the benefit of the general public as well. With a certification, they will be able to identify those who have the capacity to do the job from those who cannot.  It also provides for a method with which workers can be sifted if they can handle appropriately the tasks that will be at hand once employed.

Healthcare certification usually entails taking a state competency exam as well as passing a criminal background check and a physical test. All of the said tests are required in order to assess if the individual is indeed capable of doing the job. After passing the test, the applicant will sometimes be provided with a card, a certificate and his or her name will be added to the online registry of the state.

Usually, the certifying authority would require applicants to show proof of passing and completing the required training for a particular course, be in a particular age, as well as possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.  Some of the courses which require certification are those for certified nursing assistants, legal nurse consulting, medical billing, and other allied health careers. Healthcare certifications for such fields are usually given by nationally recognized institutions as well as by state-level organizations.

Nursing Assistant Certification

One can work in a nursing facility as a nursing assistant by acquiring nursing assistant certifications.  These certifications are a requirement to anyone who is thinking of entering the medical field as a nursing assistant.  It is a state and federal requirement to anyone who would like to work legally in any state in the US.  The certification serves as the standard with which one’s competencies and skills are measured as well as a way of ensuring the full capabilities of a person in delivering the appropriate healthcare that is needed.

As a rule, no one can be allowed to work as nursing assistant without a certification although there are a few exceptions where one who is currently enrolled in a nursing assistant program can be allowed to work for a few months or so. The certification can require different factors such as possessing a high school diploma, finishing the required number of training hours which vary from state to state, and being in a particular age which is allowed by the state.

Certification is done by undergoing a state examination which will test your knowledge and skills that are related with nursing assistant work.  Usually, the test is conducted by the training facility which conducted the program or it could be outsourced to an online testing company which will keep and provide the needed examination.  The exam is composed of two parts – a written or oral exam and a skills demonstration test which shall be conducted by authorized personnel by the licensing branch of the government usually the state’s Department of Health.

The written or oral exam is commonly composed of 90 test items or more depending on the policy of the state and education boards.  The applicant should be able to pass this part of the exam as well as the skills test.  The skills portion usually takes 5 randomly selected skills to be demonstrated on testing officials and to successfully pass all 5 skills.  Sometimes the testing authority would require applicants to bring another person to act as the patient during the demonstration. They may also be requested to bring the necessary materials such as a toothbrush, a bedpan, and other materials which are commonly used in taking care of patients.

If the written exam is done online, one can obtain the test results immediately after taking the test. He can therefore easily know if he passes or fails and would need to retake the examination.  In other cases, the test results could be given after 10 to 30 days after the exam.  The skills portion results can also be taken right after the test and may include some recommendations as to which skill to improve.   If one passes the exam, he or she will be certified and would be included in the state’s nurse aide registry.  Most states usually employ an online registry and do not issue any paper certification.  Hence, in order for one to know if a person is certified or not, he would need to check the state’s registry.
